Salalah Oman

In the Oman province of Dhofar, Salalah Oman is the second largest town in Oman. Though it is not the capitol of Oman, Muscat is, it is the capitol of the Southern province.

Called the “perfume capitol of Arabia” Salalah Oman is an extremely popular tourist destination. The availability of beautiful, world famous perfume is compounded by the natural beauty of the area, attracting many tourists. Surrounded by mountains, the area is green and lush, especially during monsoon season. Though the most frequently spotted animal is the cattle that grazes all around the city, Salalah also has many interesting and rare animals. Though leopards and hyenas are more commonly thought of in terms of East Africa, they live in the mountains around the city. This has caused Salalah to be a popular destination for animal lovers. The combination of the preferable climate and exotic wildlife has made Oman just as popular as Africa for those who want to see these animals in their natural habitat.

Located on the Persian Gulf, Salalah enjoys surprisingly tropical climate for the majority of the year due to its proximity to the Arabian Sea. For almost the entire year the region boasts temperatures in the 90s. This proximity has caused Salalah to become a major tourist destination for scuba diving. The beaches of Salalah are known worldwide for being perfectly white. Many tourists also participate in bird watching in outside of the city.

The port of Salalah is one of the most used ports of entry into India, the Middle East and Africa. This is true not only now but also for the entirety of history. Even as far back as 100 BCE Salalah’s location was used as a port. Salalah contains the ruins of Sumaharam.

Salalah is also the burial place of the prophet Job. Because Job is a holy man in Christian, Muslim and Jewish religions this tomb is made available to anyone, regardless of his religion. The tomb is only twenty miles away from the village, overlooking it from the top of a hill. Even without the ultimate destination of the holy tomb the trip to the top of the hill is a worthwhile venture. The simple beauty as you travel through simple goat farms and homes is just as valuable as the view of Salalah from the top of the hill.

One of the premier travel destinations within Salalah are the Frankincense Trees. These Frankincense pillars stand as a monumental testament to the importance of the Frankincense trade in that region throughout history. It is rumored the even Queen Sheeba traveled to Salalah to get her Frankincense.

Salalah is not a large city with skyscrapers or smog disturbing the natural beauty of the area. It is a simple town that still has small coconut farms and the occasional banana plantation. This makes Salalah one of the most beautiful areas in the entire region since its rich natural beauty is unspoiled.
