Al Mirani Fort a Piece of History Rejuvenated
Posted by admin in Articles About Oman on December 5, 2009
The Al Mirani fort is fresh from all of its most recent renovations. The fort in a sense displays a majestic aura that seems to have come out of a fairy tale or sort. This particular fort, along with the Al Jalali Fort was the main source of defense from people who were trying to enter the sea port of Muscat. The fort was great in providing an adamant amount of protection to the land by sea.
Sultan Oaboos just recently approved state funding in order to restore this once essential fort. The fort consists of walls that are three feet thick. These walls create an impressive barrier around the entire fort. There are also mountains as well as crags that can be found on Al Mirani Fort as well. For tourists that are not accustomed to the forts layout, navigating this area by yourself can be extremely complex.
Upon entering the fort, visitors are taken to a stairway that leads into separate entrances for each level of the fort. The fort was built to be complex, in the instance that the enemy was ever strong enough to pierce through the forces at sea. For anyone who is not able to follow the stairways of the fort, elevators have been installed to make the voyage easier.
There are a plethora of different towers that make up the entire fort. However, the most impressive tower is the one that resembles a semi circle. This tower allows visitors the opportunity to take in the stunning scenery that surrounds the entire building. Soldiers would avidly use this tower in order to lookout for oncoming invaders.
There are some parts of the fort that actually reveal a stunning vision of the ocean. Visitors can gain an incredible view of both the harbor as well as the town of Muscat. Across from the harbor there is an interesting rock outcrop that is avidly displayed.
On this rock the names of all the ships that have visited the Muscat harbor can be found. All of the names have been carved into this rock in order to commemorate all that have once visited this renowned harbor. No one is allowed to swim or fish within this area. The crystal blue waters of the fort remain undisturbed in order to commemorate all who once visited the fort centuries ago.
The top room of one of the largest towers on the fort is actually a museum that showcases all the history and the glory that this fort once possessed. Visitors crowd this museum in order to catch a glimpse of the 17th century Omani sword that can still be found inside of its barriers.
The museum boasts the rich culture of this fort and showcases why so many Omanis consider this fort to be a wondrous place. There are vintage photos of Muscat Harbor as well as warrior shields that were made from animal skins that are displayed in the museum.
Although Al Mirani Fort is past it’s fighting days. One can still visit the fort and envision exactly what the soldiers from centuries past had to endure in order to protect their coveted land.
