Jebel Akdhar a City Full of History


The city of Jebel Akhdar is full of an immense amount of history and nature that resides in a few square miles of land. This particular city has an extremely cooler temperature than other surrounding Omani cities. During the winter season, residents can expect to experience temperatures that are well below zero during the night.

Even in the summer, temperatures at Jebel Akhdar remain about 20 to 30 degrees cooler than other Omani cities. Despite, the difference in temperature the city of Jebel Akhdar is a popular tourist destination. Tourists avidly visit the city to engage in day trips and even camping endeavors. The city is familiar to all Omani residents.

However, this city used to be under the guard of military secrecy. It was not until roads began to be built in this city that many Omanis were finally given the chance to experience this lands history firsthand. A lot of native Omanis can tell you a plethora of different stories about this piece of land.

The city of Jebel Akhdar is made up of a mountain range that resides in Western Hajar. This name in English translates to Green Mountain. The mountain range stretches from the city of Muscat all the way to a city in Saudi Arabia known as Sayq. There are a vast amount of opportunities to engage in different day trips while scouring the mountains terrain or take overnight hikes along it.

The hiking trail consists of many different paths that you can take. Some of these paths were actually used by the Omani army and lead to small plantations. Although the people that once resided in these plantations are long gone, the remains of what once was a thriving city can be found. The plantations of the city are known for growing some of the best fruits and nuts in the country of Oman.

The plantations would harvest pomegranates, walnuts and peaches. If you are making it a note to visit Jebel Akhdar, you want to ensure that you pack warm clothes. The temperature within the city can get pretty frigid at night, and the city is accustomed to experiencing bouts of rain.

In order to understand the amount of significance that the city of Jebel Akdhar holds to the citizens of Oman, you need to understand the history behind the city. During 1954 to 1959 there was actually a civil war that took part in this city. The war was between oil developers and the natives of Oman.

Saudi Arabia came into the picture and wanted to claim some of the land within Jebel Akdhar. There were a total of nine different villages that can be found in the city. Out of these nine villages only three of the villages remained with Omani occupants while the rest of the villages were inhabited by people of Saudi Arabian decent.

The ruler of Saudi Arabia had convinced many Omani citizens to join their forces by bribing them with gifts. Although the Omani Army outnumbered the Saudi’s the army went into hiding. The Omani Army which became known as the rebels finally unleashed their frustration on the Saudi’s and worked to drive them out of the land. Many Omani natives have fathers and grandfathers that were a part of the rebels.
